What To Watch: Love, Guaranteed

Older Gen-Zs and Millenials can reminisce on times when they had to request a film from Netflix and were sent a DVD in the mail. Not only does the streaming platform now have movies and shows readily available, but it’s also created and produced great films of its own. Netflix originals have varied in genres, but romantic comedies have exceeded expectations. Once again Netflix hit it out of the park with the newest film, Love, Guaranteed.

The film has two familiar faces as its leading roles, Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. Some may recognize Cook from her iconic role as the nerd turned prom queen, Laney Boggs, in the 90s hit film She’s All That. Others (definitely) recognize Damon Wayans Jr. from his role as Coach in the extremely quotable television series New Girl.

In Love, Guaranteed, Racael Leigh Cook plays Susan Whitaker, a pro-bono lawyer who fights for those who need it most. However, this changes when she meets Nick Evans (Damon Wayans Jr.) who asks her to represent him in a case against a dating service. Susan is obviously skeptical of Nick’s intentions but agrees to help him when he cuts her a check with multiple zeros that would pay all her bills and allow her to continue to help others for free.

Without giving away too many spoilers, this film follows the typical romantic comedy trope. However, this film shows the realistic (and horrible) side of online dating. Since Susan herself had never used this dating site, her coworkers make her a profile (you know, for the case) and set her up on multiple dates. She quickly learns that some men don’t look like their picture, some are ruder in person and some don’t show up to the date at all.

Dating is crazy, especially online, and this film portrays that in a comical way. Audiences of all ages can watch this film and laugh at their own horrible online dating experiences because everyone who uses online dating sites probably has at least one. This film is entertaining, hilarious and a great take on modern romantic comedies.
