The Los Angeles Dodgers are the 2020 World Series Champions!

The MLB World Series has concluded in dramatic fashion, with the Los Angeles Dodgers beating the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. We recently discussed what made this year’s season of baseball so different from any other, what with it being a considerably shortened season and the absence of fans due to Covid-19. But against all odds, the 2020 season has come to an end with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the number one team in the league. We’re going to break down the most critical parts of the series for both teams, their biggest successes and shortcomings, and what led to the Dodgers’ eventual win.

The series got off to a very strong start for LA, who had their ace Clayton Kershaw at the helm for pitching. Kershaw has built up a reputation of being one of the best pitchers in baseball right now, with three Cy Young awards and an MVP to his credit, but he’s also become rather infamous for failing to perform in the postseason. The ghost of Kershaw past seemed to be exorcised for game one however, as he threw six strong innings and only gave up one run. The Dodgers’ offense was also dominant against the Rays’ pitching for this game, as a consistent round of base hits combined with some long balls allowed LA to accrue eight total runs. Although the Rays were able to get some runs of their own, three in total, game one was the Dodgers’ game to win.

For game two, the Rays wanted to make sure that they avoided the mistakes that they made with game one, while also showing exactly why they made it to the World Series in the first place. With Blake Snell on the mound, the Rays weren’t about to make the same pitching mistakes that they made in game one. After a pretty strong four innings from Snell, he began to waver in the fifth after giving up a walk and then a two-run home run immediately after. Not wanting to stick with a pitcher that’s beginning to come apart, especially in the World Series, the Rays went to their young bullpen to close out the latter half of the game. On the side of offense, the Rays rode a Brandon Lowe explosion in the form of two home runs to eventually score six runs to the Dodgers’ four. With the series tied and a fifth game now guaranteed, the Rays proved that they weren’t going to make winning the World Series easy for the Dodgers.

As game three played out it became clear once again where the Dodgers stood in the hierarchy of the MLB, as they put together a game that flexed all of their strengths at once. The young Walker Buehler showed a commendable amount of poise as he pitched an absolute gem of six innings, gathering ten strikeouts, only allowing three hits, and giving up one run. This game really ended up seeming like a repeat of game one, with the Rays’ pitching coming apart due to the Dodgers’ combination of raw power and finesse at the plate. With base hit after base hit coupled with home run after home run, it’s surprising that the Dodgers only put up six runs in their win. The Dodgers proved with this game just how much of a threat their lineup is to the Rays. With a lot of teams in the MLB, you’ll begin to notice that their players that bat later in the order aren’t as impressive offensively as the first few guys in the lineup. The Dodgers proved to be the exception to this pretty much all season, and one could argue that they might have too much talent. With guys like Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, and Cody Bellinger, along with guys like Justin Turner and Corey Seager, the Dodgers are so well-rounded at the plate that they can spread these guys out through the lineup to make for one dangerous batting order.

Moving on to game four, both teams had a lot at stake that they needed to fight for in order to stay ahead in this series. The Dodgers were on the cusp of taking a 3-1 lead, a lead that would put them in a very good place statistically speaking. The Rays on the other hand were faced with getting the series tied up once again so that they could even think about getting a lead at all in the series. With the stage set, both teams put together perhaps the most dramatic World Series game in the past few years. This game had both teams at their offensive best, with young postseason standouts Corey Seager and Randy Arozarena continuing their record breaking home run clinics and each team just generally putting together good at bats. The most eventful part of the game came in its final moments, with two on, two outs, Brett Phillips at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, and a one run deficit to top it all off, the Rays were at the end of their rope for this game. What happened next would be nothing short of a miracle for the Rays, and an absolute nightmare for the Dodgers. With a ball and two strikes in the count, Phillips got a pitch inside from reliever Kenley Jansen that he didn’t miss, lining it over the infield and into shallow centerfield. As Kevin Kiermaier broke for home and Arozarena followed close behind, the Dodgers center fielder committed one of the strangest fielding errors in recent memory as he practically tossed the ball away from himself, flipping it out of his glove and to his left. This cemented Kiermaier’s run subsequently tying the game, but the errors didn’t stop there for the Dodgers. In the heat of the moment, the Dodgers center fielder rocketed the ball back towards the plate as Arozarena came barreling through third. His throw was off line though, so in an effort to stop the run, first baseman Max Muncy cut off the off-target throw and relayed the ball to the catcher. At this point Arozarena was running for home so fast that he completely stumbled over himself on the third base line, and it looked as if he would be caught in an inning ending rundown with the game tied seven a piece. But luck proved to be on the side of the Rays, as Muncy’s throw came in well to the right of catcher Will Smith, missing his glove and allowing Arozarena to dive into home plate head first to win the game. The Rays obviously felt on top of the world after this incredible sequence of events, and with a guaranteed game six on the horizon, all the Rays had to do was finally take a lead in the series.

Unfortunately for the Rays, the dominance of the Dodgers would continue into game five as LA had Clayton Kershaw back on the mound with the rust of previous Octobers thoroughly shaken off after game one of the series. Kershaw continued his notable postseason performance by going five innings and holding the Rays to the only two runs they were able to score in the game, striking out six batters along the way. It was more of the same for the Dodgers at the plate as well this game, with four runs to their credit and one of them coming from a 434 foot bomb of a home run hit by Max Muncy. One of the biggest faults of the Rays this game was in starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow, who put up commendable numbers in the regular season but wasn’t able to succeed in the postseason up to this point. The Dodgers took the series lead back once again with this game, and with game six coming up it would be do or die for Tamba Bay.

Compared to the rest of the World Series, game six was perhaps one of the least exciting in terms of offensive performance for both teams. The Rays got off to a very strong start in the first inning of the game, as Randy Arozarena continued his postseason tear with a home run into right field on the second pitch that he saw. From that point on though, both teams seemed like ghosts of their previous selves. For Tampa Bay, their lack of production at the plate was due to the revolving door of pitchers that came out of the Dodgers bullpen, as rookie Tony Gonsolin was yanked in the first inning after proving that he just didn’t have it that night. The situation was flipped for the Dodgers however, as they had to contend with Blake Snell and some of his nastiest pitching all postseason. Snell was able to strikeout nine and only allow two hits in his time up on the mound, shutting down a Dodgers lineup that scored runs like it was nothing. For everyone watching at home, it seemed like Snell would be the man to get the job done for the Rays, but manager Kevin Cash had different ideas. Coming out to the mound in the sixth inning, Cash motioned for the bullpen in a move that stunned the entire baseball world. Snell got taken out of the game after he was absolutely dealing on the mound, and after having thrown only about seventy pitches total. The reactions around the ballpark were nothing short of priceless, as the Dodgers could not have been more pleased and Blake Snell could not have been more aggravated. The aggravation wouldn’t stop there for Tampa Bay, as this move essentially put the nail in the proverbial coffin of the Rays’ World Series chances. After pulling Snell, the Rays immediately gave up the lead when the Dodgers were able to score two quick runs, and every baseball fan in Tampa Bay collectively put their head in their hands and kept it there till the end of the game. As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Rays, Mookie Betts capped off his remarkable season with a towering solo home run in the eight inning, effectively taking all of the wind out of Tampa Bay’s sails. All the Dodgers needed to do at that point was hold the Rays scoreless for one more inning, and with Julio Urías pitching it ended up being a bit easier than some people anticipated. Urías was able to get two very quick outs in the ninth, and with Willy Adames up to bat, it seemed as if the Rays decided to concede the whole series at this point. After whiffing on the first pitch and taking the second for a strike up and in, Adames got a fastball inside and blinked, not even bothering to swing on what could have possibly been the start of something miraculous for the Rays. All they would have needed was a base hit and a bomb from the next guy up, but in this case Tampa Bay just looked like they were done. The Dodgers won the 2020 World Series on the save from Urías, putting the cherry on top of one of baseball’s weirdest seasons.

With the offseason officially underway, it’s time for the teams that weren’t able to win it all to make the adjustments they need to improve. And with free agency right around the corner, it’ll be interesting to see where each team stacks up come time for the 2021 season.

Who do you think has the best chances of winning the World Series next year? Will the Dodgers continue being the hottest team in baseball or will a new team rise to take their place? Influencers with Young Fans Get Away with More

Influencers are no stranger to scandal. At any moment their comfortable lifestyle could be ripped from under them with one trending hashtag. However, it seems that some influencers are constantly getting away with bad behavior, and the only reason they aren’t ‘canceled’ is because their fans are too young to understand the severity of the situation. Here are two examples:

Bryce Hall

Hall has made a name for himself on TikTok. His audience grew when rumors started circling that he and Addison Rae were dating and he soon became the leader of the Sway House. He was quickly the target of ridicule and criticism when he continued to throw parties during the global pandemic. Los Angeles was on lockdown, but Hall and other members of the Sway House continued to party and even celebrated Hall’s 21st birthday. Soon, the City of LA turned off the utilities to one of their houses in an attempt to stop them.

After this scandal, Hall was arrested with fellow Sway House member, Jaden Hossler, for a drug-related charge in Texas. The sheriff’s office later confirmed that Hall was charged with possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana which can result in up to 180 days in county jail or a fine up to $2,000. Hossler was arrested and charged for possession of four to 400 grams of a controlled substance in penalty group two (which in Texas includes most hallucinogens and stimulants) and possession of 2 to 4 ounces of marijuana. They were released after posting a combined $11,500 bail.

Recently, Hall got into a physical altercation at a restaurant in LA, which was recorded and posted online. Hall was using a vape inside the restaurant (it’s illegal to smoke anything inside an LA restaurant) and his waiter asked him repeatedly to stop. Hall defended himself and explained that the waiter then took his credit card and didn’t return it to him when he asked for it repeatedly. He then said that the manager attempted to escort him out of the restaurant but refused to give him back his credit card and that’s when members of the Sway House and the restaurant staff began to fight. However, multiple workers recall Hall immediately becoming aggressive after the waiter simply asked him to stop vaping. A witness also confirmed that Hall was the first one to throw a punch. Although the influencers were gone by the time the police showed up, the LAPD is investigating to confirm what happened.

The ACE Family

Family channels on YouTube are supposed to show their audience how they live day to day. In their multimillion-dollar homes, they act like a normal family and film essentially every moment of their life. Even though these videos are filled with children laughing and a happy family, no one knows the amount of stress that is created when trying to film multiple videos per week.

The ACE Family, which consists of Austin, Catherine, and their young children, has faced backlash for being inappropriate around their children and complaining about materialistic items that most of their fans dream of obtaining. In the past, Austin posted a video of a six-year-old licking a suggestively shaped lollipop. He filmed himself laughing at her and even purchasing the lollipop. Audiences criticized him for not only allowing her to grab the candy but also filming it and posting it for anyone to see. They’ve also faced backlash for simply having their children in the videos because of how much they film. Unlike Hollywood, there are no rules or regulations to keep children safe on YouTube. Some audience members are concerned because their young children technically cannot consent to be filmed and fear that they are being filmed too much.

Their rise in fame has increased their wealth, but they still complain and attempt to relate to the audience that once did. For example, they created a three-part documentary which showed the construction of their multi-million dollar home. Austin and Catherine also made a video with a sad thumbnail and created clickbait to convince audiences that something horrible happened during construction. Instead, the problem in the video was them complaining that they would have to move into their home without the landscape being done. Although this is not inappropriate or hurtful, it still shows that they can’t relate to their audience anymore and they are unaware or simply don’t care enough to change their content because their young audience will still watch every video.

Recently, The ACE Family has gotten into more serious trouble. Catherine uploaded a video titled “A Day in the Life with Catherine” where she showed the audience what she does throughout her daily life. At the beginning of the video, Catherine is filming the intro with Austin holding their daughters behind her. When Catherine begins, Austin comments on his hair and she begins to put the camera down in frustration. Austin then raises his voice and even curses at Catherine with their daughters still in the room. Catherine didn’t edit this mistake out and some audience members speculated that she did that on purpose to reveal how Austin truly behaves. The ACE Family quickly made a video in response claiming that they were bickering all morning and that Austin’s action was justified. Catherine explained that if it were a more serious situation she would leave with the children because she has the ability to do so. Austin defended himself by saying that most parents accidentally curse in front of their children.

Although these are just two examples, they both represent the type of influencer who has a young following yet continues to post inappropriate content. Other members of the Sway House and other family channels feel just as entitled and will continue to make inappropriate content because they know it will get views and gain them more subscribers. Children who use YouTube don’t see the underlying issues with their favorite influencers, so it’s the older generation’s responsibility to hold influencers accountable.

Young Americans and their Battle with Voting

We are only days away from Election Day, and it’s safe to say that tensions are high. If you thought the 2016 election was hectic, well, I think it’s best if you buckle in.

Millions of early voters have already cast in their ballots. Amongst these people are first time voters. This election has caused the younger generation, ages 18-29, to rise up and voice their political concerns from both sides. According to previous censuses, young people are the least likely to cast in their votes for elections in America. The reasons for this vary from thinking voting is ineffective to not being educated enough on issues. Voting is considered a civic duty, however, young men and women aren’t typically interested in politics when they have other things to worry about: school, careers, and the stress that comes with starting their adult life.

It’s no secret that this election has brought division amongst all sorts of people. Citizens and parties are more focused on asserting their dominance based on their political beliefs rather than the advancement of this country, and for this reason, young voters are coming through to fill out their ballots early and get their voice in. They have slowly begun to realize that elections dictate their futures, and if they aren’t happy with the circumstances of the country they live in, they have the ability to change course. Many people have previously argued that because there is an electoral college, their votes don’t matter, however, the popular votes alert state officials to tell them who the citizens of their states prefer. Recently, more people have been urged to voice their concerns and elect officials who stand by them with the nation’s best interest in their minds.

There is a lot that goes into voting. The presidential race itself can be confusing and dividing, as people scramble to find the representative they support the most. In the beginning of the 2020 election, there were 1,222 candidates running for presidency, and although we have narrowed down to 4 now, it’s very time consuming to research each candidate’s political views. As if it isn’t already hard to narrow down picks, when a candidate drops out of the race, one must find the second best option, and as candidates continue to drop, people run out of their favorites.

Take Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren for example. Both candidates are members of the Senate and share many similar political views such as their stances on environmental issues. Inside Climate News reported, “Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) cited climate as the main reason he opposed President Donald Trump’s free trade deal with Mexico. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said climate had to be part of defense strategy.” Young Democratic voters mainly favored Sanders and Warrens due to their progressive beliefs, as young voters are typically more liberal, however, when both dropped out of the race, the youth eagerly looked to who they’d endorse and it was Vice President Joe Biden. Now, this is a challenge because Biden is less progressive than the other candidates, however, even though he isn’t a favorite with young voters, they have coined a term: Settle For Biden. There’s a detachment because voters aren’t exactly pledging their allegiance to Biden, but simply saying, “Well, this is as good as it’s going to get.” While the majority of the young Democratic voters have decided to settle, there are some voters who have become discouraged enough not to vote. The Republicans face the same problem with young voters, but this election has seen a rise in numbers for both sides.

The problem is just this: voting is hard. It’s a massive responsibility to research your candidates and then narrow down the list and then continue to narrow it down until there is just one option left. And what happens when that candidate isn’t the one the people want?

Young voters have been encouraged to show up as they make up a third of the votes. Amongst the states who have already shown a high percentage of young voters include Texas, Florida, and California. These states also have the greatest number of electoral votes.

The World Series Is Here and This Year Is Like No Other

Across America, baseball fans are tuning in to the 2020 World Series with their palms sweaty and breath held as they wait to see if the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Tampa Bay Rays are going to take home the biggest prize in baseball. Both teams have demonstrated an immense amount of talent and persistence, as out of the thirty teams in the league these two have proved that they are the best. This season has been particularly challenging for the MLB, as the Covid-19 virus has forced the league to approach this season much differently than others. We’re going to go over some of those challenges, and take a look at both teams to see how they made it this far and if they have what it takes to end the year as champions.

This year’s baseball season has handled the coronavirus in a number of different ways, most notably being the fact that the season was shortened from 162 games to 60 games for each team. Unfortunately for Major League Baseball, the coronavirus ramped up in intensity right as spring training was underway. As other sports leagues like the NBA and NHL were deciding to postpone their seasons, MLB decided that their regular season would be postponed indefinitely. For the longest time it seemed like there simply wouldn’t be any baseball this year, until sometime in the summer, reports began to circulate that league officials, team representatives, and the MLB Players Association were going to begin deliberation on how to conduct a shortened regular season. After initial deals were shot down by the MLPA, an agreement was finally reached that would allow for a restructured regular season. In addition to the 60 game season, teams would attempt to stay on their respective coasts in order to reduce travel, and fans wouldn’t be allowed inside the parks. Players had the option to opt out of the season for personal health concerns, and a few players, like the Washington Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman, took advantage of this. Although the league took many precautions to avoid the spread of illness, some outbreaks did still occur within certain clubhouses. This resulted in numerous postponements and a lot of doubleheaders for teams, but luckily players that did get sick were able to recover quickly and the regular season was able to end mostly on schedule.

With the end of the regular season came the playoffs, and this year’s format was also rather different because of the shortened season. More teams were included in the playoffs, and they would have the American League play primarily at San Diego’s Petco Park and the National League would have their playoff games at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium. The playoffs went much smoother than the regular season, as fewer teams and less travel meant that there was a smaller chance of any breakouts. This was a good sign for the World Series, as many people were afraid that it was going to extend into November or even December, but as of right now it’s slated to wrap up close to the end of October like it usually does.

Speaking of the World Series, it’s happening, like right now. The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently facing the Tampa Bay Rays in a series that’s tied with each team having a win, ensuring that there is going to be at least five games in the series. This year’s World Series is going to be pretty historic no matter the outcome, as the Dodgers haven’t won a World Series since 1988 and the Rays haven’t won one since they were established in 1998.

This time around the Dodgers are pretty hopeful that this year is finally going to be their year, as they’ve become rather infamous for reaching the postseason every year for the past seven years without a single World Series title to show for it. Everything has seemed to be going in the Dodgers’ favor this season however, which has fans hopeful that they’ll finally come home with the trophy this year. One of the biggest tools in the Dodgers arsenal that’s helped them this year is outfielder Mookie Betts, who the Dodgers acquired from the Boston Red Sox after the 2019 season. Before Betts reached the Dodgers, it was no secret how talented he was both with a bat and in the field. It seems that Los Angeles has unlocked something in Betts that the baseball world has never seen before, as even with the shortened season Betts has been able to craft an MVP level performance. With 16 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a batting average of .292, Betts has shown that he’s worth the $365 million dollar contract that he signed this year. Alongside Betts, the Dodgers also have big bats in the form of Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, and the dominant Corey Seager, who has hit seven home runs in the postseason alone. When paired with the pitching talents of veteran Clayton Kershaw and the young Walker Buehler, it makes total sense that the Dodgers won 43 of their 60 games this season. Now fans just have to wait to see if they can finally stick the landing.

In the case of Tampa Bay, the Rays are in the World Series for the first time since 2008 when they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies, and they’re in the playoffs for the first time since 2013 when they fell to the Boston Red Sox. Over the past few seasons, much like the Dodgers, the Rays have been building up quite the respectable lineup. Their acquisitions of pitcher Tyler Glasnow and outfielder Austin Meadows in 2018 were some of their most notable moves, and younger players like infielder Brandon Lowe have proven to be vital members of the team. With a record of 40 wins and 20 losses this season, Tampa Bay has also emerged as one of the few teams to really excel in the shortened regular season. And to the Rays’ credit, playing in the same division as the New York Yankees is comparable to playing in the same division as the New England Patriots, so to outplay one of baseball’s most recognizable teams goes to show the level of talent that the Rays have this year. Even with all of their talent however, the general consensus is that Tampa Bay is the underdog to Los Angeles this year. This is not to say that the Rays don’t stand a chance, they’ve already prevented a total series sweep with their most recent win, but the Dodgers have just been so dominant this season that it seems like they’re destined to walk away as World Series champions. Only time will tell at this point, as the Rays and Dodgers are currently tied up in the series and still have a long way to go until a victor is decided.
