What to Watch During October

It’s finally October and spooky season is here! Here’s a reminder of classic Halloween movies from your childhood (you’re welcome)

Twitches (2005)

Everyone remembers Tia and Tamera Mowry starring as twin witches in this Disney classic. Twins separated at birth meet on their 21st birthday and soon find out that they must save the world with their powers. Fans will recognize the iconic moon and sun necklaces that the girls wear and the amazing outfit choices. The twins are definitely Y2K style gurus and their outfits would be a hit today.

Halloweentown (1998)

We all wanted to be Marnie, right?! She was only twelve when she found out she was a witch and saved Halloweentown for the first time. Halloweentown was someplace everyone wanted to visit and that still hasn’t changed. This film is over 20 years old but is still enjoyed by audiences everywhere.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Although it was created in 1993, kids can still enjoy the antics of the very entertaining Sanderson sisters (and crush on Thackery, you know before he gets turned into a cat). The three witches crack adult jokes that go above the head of kids so you may laugh at things you didn’t understand before.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

This was an actual horror movie as a child so hopefully, it won’t be too scary this time around. The spirits, skeletons, and knights all come alive to torment the innocent family that moves in and for a kid’s movie — it’s terrifying.

Monster House (2006)

This is another “too scary to be a kid’s movie” type of film. The owner of the possessed house dies right in front of the main character in the first thirty minutes. Not to mention the house then tries to attack and swallow children.

Scooby-Doo (2002)

Although this may not technically be a Halloween movie, this film is a great inspiration for costumes. Whether it’s as the gang, Mary Jane, or random vacationers-turned-zombies fans can reference the film by dressing up. (This is also a great film to watch any time of the year really.)

The Return of Y2K Fashion

It’s clear that fashion, along with history, tends to repeat itself. The 60s, 70s, 80s, and early-mid 90s have all made fashion comebacks throughout the late 2000s and 2010s. Now, fashion from the late 90s and 2000s (aka Y2K) is returning to the closets of teenagers and young adults.

Besides the incredible fashion, Y2K was historic because it marked the changing of millennia. Although the trends of Y2K fashion run from the late 90s to 2010, Y2K is really referring to the year 2000. During the fall of 1999, the whole world was excited for the new year and in anticipation of the technology that would be created.

The expansion of technology was reflected in the fashion trends at the time. Designer names and logos were extremely important along with bling and bedazzled prints on shirts and jeans. This was highly due to the celebrities who endorsed (and basically started) Y2K fashion: Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, and Lindsay Lohan.

These women started the trends that are resurfacing now such as camisoles, cropped zip-ups, and low-rise denim skirts and jeans (these DON’T need to resurface, please Paris, keep this one to yourself). This holy trinity went through an iconic party phase together and there are plenty of paparazzi pictures of them wearing classic 2000s party attire. Fans can also watch movies like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde to get inspiration.

There are plenty of other clothes and accessories to fully complete the Y2K aesthetic. Think back to years of playing with Bratz dolls and their fashion choices. Bright pinks and purples are a must along with matching patterns or creating monochrome outfits. Accessories include butterfly clips, bandanas, headbands, and mostly everything else from when you were five.

Like all repeating fashion, those who originally wore it are shocked that it’s coming back and those wearing it now are modernizing it. However, it seems that most people who originally wore it are excited about its return. These trends and clothes reflect simpler times of A Simple Life, flip phones, and MySpace.

Five Channels to Binge

If you run out of shows to binge on streaming platforms such as Hulu or Netflix, you should hop over to YouTube and check out these channels.

  1. First We Feast

First We Feast is best known for its segment, Hot Ones, an interview show where guests have to answer questions while eating spicy wings. The wings get hotter and hotter as the interview progresses and most celebrities are chugging water or milk by the final one. Host Sean Evans is often praised in the comments for asking interesting and very appropriate questions. He has even surprised celebrities with the information he knows about them.

  1. WOWPresents

World Of Wonder is the network that gifted audiences with hit shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. This YouTube channel has videos like Untucked, which shows behind-the-scenes footage from RuPaul’s Drag Race, and UNHhh, a show hosted by the iconic duo Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova. (If UNHhh was an hour long show on VH1 it would win an Emmy. I’m serious this webseries is HILARIOUS).

  1. D’Angelo Wallace

D’Angelo Wallace talks about whatever he wants. He makes commentary videos on basically anything that interests him and he does it extremely well. He created amazing videos on the toxic trio, Shane, Tati, and Jeffree, where he explained all their shady activity and called them out for it. He has a great way of explaining each topic he’s discussing and makes the videos extremely entertaining.

  1. Chris Klemens

Chris Klemens has been on the internet for many years, but he has been (FINALLY) getting the recognition he deserves. Not only are his video hilarious, he uses his platform to raise money for various charities and urges his audience to become informed on important social issues. During the pandemic alone, Chris has used his platform to support local small black owned businesses, donate to individuals impacted by COVID-19, and gift teachers supplies they need to fill their classrooms this year.

  1. Kurtis Conner

Folks! (Watch his videos and you will get this reference.) Kurtis Conner is another commentary YouTuber that makes videos on cringe-worthy topics. He normally calls out weird people on the internet for creating really weird (and typically offensive) content. He’s also a stand-up comedian so his videos are full of silly jokes and plenty of one-man skits in front of a green screen.

What To Watch: Love, Guaranteed

Older Gen-Zs and Millenials can reminisce on times when they had to request a film from Netflix and were sent a DVD in the mail. Not only does the streaming platform now have movies and shows readily available, but it’s also created and produced great films of its own. Netflix originals have varied in genres, but romantic comedies have exceeded expectations. Once again Netflix hit it out of the park with the newest film, Love, Guaranteed.

The film has two familiar faces as its leading roles, Rachael Leigh Cook and Damon Wayans Jr. Some may recognize Cook from her iconic role as the nerd turned prom queen, Laney Boggs, in the 90s hit film She’s All That. Others (definitely) recognize Damon Wayans Jr. from his role as Coach in the extremely quotable television series New Girl.

In Love, Guaranteed, Racael Leigh Cook plays Susan Whitaker, a pro-bono lawyer who fights for those who need it most. However, this changes when she meets Nick Evans (Damon Wayans Jr.) who asks her to represent him in a case against a dating service. Susan is obviously skeptical of Nick’s intentions but agrees to help him when he cuts her a check with multiple zeros that would pay all her bills and allow her to continue to help others for free.

Without giving away too many spoilers, this film follows the typical romantic comedy trope. However, this film shows the realistic (and horrible) side of online dating. Since Susan herself had never used this dating site, her coworkers make her a profile (you know, for the case) and set her up on multiple dates. She quickly learns that some men don’t look like their picture, some are ruder in person and some don’t show up to the date at all.

Dating is crazy, especially online, and this film portrays that in a comical way. Audiences of all ages can watch this film and laugh at their own horrible online dating experiences because everyone who uses online dating sites probably has at least one. This film is entertaining, hilarious and a great take on modern romantic comedies.
