The Best Spider-Man Comic Books to Get Started With

When Marvel’s Spider-Man swung on to the pages of Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, no one could have guessed how the wall-crawler would revolutionize the comics industry for decades to come. With hundreds of comic issues and numerous movies under his belt, Spider-Man has become a household name in nearly every part of the world. His red and blue suit are instantly recognizable, and his story of tragedy and responsibility has been told dozens of times over. One of the more popular forms of Spider-Man related media in the past fifteen years has been the big screen adaptations of the web-slinger, of which there have been eight up to this point. It’s pretty common knowledge that all eight of these films aren’t exactly connected, however, the character has been rebooted a couple of different times since the first Spider-Man movie featuring Tobey Maguire that was released in 2002. In recent years, British actor Tom Holland has been playing Spider-Man as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) being pretty well-received by fans. Now with the third film in the series on the horizon, news of a massive crossover has been circulating all over the internet. Reports from The Hollywood Reporter in recent weeks have said that numerous characters from past Spider-Man films will return for the newest installment, leading many to speculate that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man will make an appearance. This would be reminiscent of the highly successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) film, which saw all kinds of Spider-Men from different dimensions come together in one movie. With the movies taking so many different chances and adapting so many different stories, it’s enough to make a more casual fan wonder just how exciting the source material is. And as exciting as it may be to dive into Spider-Man’s source material, it can also be a pretty daunting task considering there are nearly sixty years worth of comics to comb through. Well we’re going to make that process a little bit easier for you, by giving you some of the best Spider-Man comics to get started with so you can build a greater appreciation for New York City’s favorite teenage arachnid.

Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: Great Power

via marvel.com

When it comes to Spider-Man stories, there’s no better place to start from than the beginning. Spider-Man was introduced to the world in Amazing Fantasy #15, before he had his own solo series. For the first time, everyone got to know awkward high school student Peter Parker and watched as he got bitten by a radioactive spider and soon learned the importance of responsibility after his Uncle Ben was tragically killed. This collection contains that very first Spider-Man comic, along with the first seventeen issues of the Amazing Spider-Man series. Here we are introduced to Spider-Man’s most recognizable villains, such as Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman. It’s classic Spider-Man at his best, with masterful storytelling from the legendary Stan Lee and the gorgeous art of Steve Ditko pairing perfectly with one another to make for the most iconic comic books of the 20th century. You can grab yourself a piece of history right here.

Spider-Man: Death of the Stacys

via cbr.com

If there’s one thing that Spider-Man’s character is known for, it’s tragedy. It seems that for every quip and lighthearted moment that the web-slinger has, there’s an equally heart-wrenching moment that comes along to put things into perspective and give Peter Parker’s actions a sense of weight. That weight of responsibility was at arguably its heaviest when Spider-Man was faced with the death of his girlfriend’s dad, and then not too long after that, the death of that same girlfriend. These two deaths were both remarkably traumatizing for Spider-Man and shaped how protective of his loved ones he would be for years to come. On top of being a pivotal point of development for Peter Parker’s character, The Night Gwen Stacy Died is perhaps one of the most iconic Spider-Man stories to ever be produced by Marvel. It’s essential reading for any budding comic reader, and you can pick up your own copy right here.

Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage

via marvel.com

Some of Spider-Man’s best stories are when he’s set against insurmountable odds but still comes out on top in the end. It’s a testament to his versatility, and it always makes for an inspiring story that people can look back on during hard times. One of the more ambitious Spider-Man comic events comes in the form of the Maximum Carnage series that saw Spidey’s most sadistic villain, Carnage, build his own gang of supervillains and wreak havoc through New York. This particular comic series is also a pretty big crossover for the webhead, as he enlists the help of other big superheroes such as Captain America, Cloak, and Dagger. The most exciting aspect of this series is its focus on the characters of Carnage and Venom, fan favorite villains that will soon be seeing film adaptations in the upcoming film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). These toothy miscreants boast the most frightening and simultaneously sick designs in comics, and the Maximum Carnage series commits plenty of pages showing off their nightmarish appearances. It’s a great series for people looking to see how Spider-Man does in a teamup, and you can take a look for yourself right here

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Vol. 1 (2016)

via comicbook.com

In recent years, Spider-Men other than Peter Parker have been introduced in the comics and built their own following of devoted fans. With events like Spider-Verse, there have been more Spideys in the comics than you could shoot a web at, but one that has stood the test of time since their introduction is Miles Morales. Miles’ first appearance was in the Ultimate Marvel line of comics, a series that took place in an alternate universe different from the Marvel universe that had been created up to that point. This comic run saw a lot of fan favorite characters get modernized or altered in one way or another, and Spider-Man was no exception. Where other characters got new costumes or origin stories however, Peter Parker was not so lucky. Very early on in the Ultimate Marvel Spider-Man series, Peter Parker was dramatically killed, and Miles Morales took over as New York’s resident wall-crawler. As the Ultimate Marvel series drew to a close however, people wanted to know what would happen to their new favorite Spider-Man. Well, to the delight of fans everywhere, Miles Morales was added to the regular Marvel universe and was able to interact with all of the other characters we know and love, including a very much alive Peter Parker. Since Miles was added to the current Marvel comics continuity, he’s been featured in many other forms of Spider-Man related media, including the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) film, and the more recent Spider-Man video games. His popularity is certainly on an upward trend that only seems to be going higher, and his first volume of issues in the normal Marvel universe is a reflection of that. You can see what all the excitement is about by picking up that first volume right here.

. . .

As far as comic book characters go, Spider-Man stands as one of the most recognizable and easily accessible. Many of his stories are relatable, engaging, and most importantly exciting. He’s become an integral part of the Marvel brand, but for people that know him from his many movies, the comics can be seen as intimidating, uncharted territory. With a little bit of help though, anyone can find a Spider-Man comic that appeals to them and gives them everything they’re looking for in a story. Hopefully these recommendations will do exactly that for you, and act as a jumping off point for you to find even more amazing Spidey comics. The Growing Importance of Streaming for Hollywood

2020 has proved to be a pretty difficult year for Hollywood, the main reason being the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic simultaneously shut down the vast majority of theaters around the world,\ and halted production on dozens of different major films that were supposed to release this year. The shutdown of theaters across the world also prevented a lot of movies that were ready for release from coming out, because there wouldn’t be any theaters open to show them. Although this was ultimately the wisest decision for both theaters and film studios in order to keep their workers and patrons safe, it’s also created a number of challenges for Hollywood for how to move on from here. When theaters slowly began to open at limited capacities around the U.S. in the summer, some studios tried to release the big films that they were sitting on in theaters. One such example was Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which released early in September. Like many of Nolan’s other films, it received relatively positive reviews from critics and casual audiences alike, but its box office returns were fairly underwhelming compared to previous films from the director. These results can be confidently attributed to the fact that not a lot of people are going to the movies because of the pandemic, and there just aren’t as many movie theaters open as there were before everything shut down in March. This begs the question, how can Hollywood make money, or at the very least get some kind of exposure for their multi-million dollar budgeted films that have been delayed several times over because of the pandemic? Well, for some of the biggest studios in Hollywood, it would appear that the answer can be found in streaming services.

Streaming services have always been a safe place for films to get more attention than they might in the theaters, primarily because of the pure convenience of being able to watch movies from home for a monthly fee that is often cheaper than a single bucket of popcorn. They’re often the last step in a film’s release cycle, as there has traditionally been more of a focus on theatrical and home video releases because that’s where the majority of Hollywood’s revenue comes from. However, now that revenue from those usual sources has declined dramatically, some major companies are taking to streaming services as a last resort. The two biggest companies to make waves with this shift in release strategy are Disney and Warner Bros., and their respective forays into releasing major films on streaming services have been met with mixed reactions.

Disney was the first one to really make the news with their utilization of their streaming service, Disney Plus, in response to the devastating effects of the pandemic. Disney’s first move towards taking advantage of everyone being home and theaters being closed was to move up the release of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s incredibly popular historical musical, Hamilton, from its original theatrical release in summer of next year to a release on Disney Plus in July of this year. This proved to be a genius move on the part of Disney, as the viewership of the musical ended up being greater than the amount of people that had seen it on Broadway, sitting at about 2.7 million views within its first week of release. The release of Hamilton on Disney Plus bolstered the streaming service’s popularity, as it previously faced criticism for a lack of content up to that point. Disney was lauded for allowing subscribers to experience a Broadway show that is infamous for being difficult to acquire tickets for, and at no additional cost other than the monthly subscription fee. It would seem that Disney had come across a great way to subvert the effects of theaters being closed while maintaining some level of profit, but things would quickly fall apart for the house of mouse with their next foray into streaming releases.

One of the biggest movies that Disney hyped up for 2020 was Mulan, a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film from 1998. Anticipation for this movie was already shaky at best before the pandemic hit, as numerous trailers indicated a massive departure from the original film’s tone and content. Things went from bad to worse for the remake as Disney announced exactly how they would be releasing Mulan on to Disney Plus, and it wouldn’t be the same as how they released Hamilton. Instead of releasing Mulan on Disney Plus at no additional cost to subscribers, it would instead be available through something Disney termed “Premier Access”, which essentially meant that on top of the monthly fee for Disney Plus, people would need to shell out thirty dollars just to watch this one film that many people weren’t excited for to begin with. On top of this bizarre set up, Disney also said that film would become free for subscribers in December of this year, effectively giving everyone more of a reason to not pay the thirty dollars to watch Mulan and just wait till it became free to watch. Disney’s motivations behind this decision were pretty clear, they were trying to make back as much of the money that they spent to make and market Mulan as possible through Disney Plus, and the money that they get from subscription fees would not be enough to cover that. With the thirty dollar price tag being roughly the equivalent of three movie tickets, this strategy could have worked if it wasn’t for a film that looked like it would underwhelm before it even released. Ever since the backlash of the Mulan film ran its course, Disney hasn’t announced any new films to be released under a similar format, but there is one company that has seen what Disney did and plans to learn from their mistakes.

One of the newest streaming services on the scene is WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, which is essentially what used to be known as HBO Now but with a fancy new coat of purple and blue paint and some more content than just Game of Thrones. When HBO Max released in May of this year, it didn’t exactly make the biggest splash like Disney Plus did in November of 2019, but it had a respectable amount of content and continues to add more to this day. The platform has recently made waves however for its decision to release one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2020 for streaming. Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to the very well-received Wonder Woman was set to release this year, but like many other films it faced delays because of the fact that many theaters simply weren’t open. The film moved from a summer release, to a fall release, and now it would seem that Warner Bros. has finally settled on releasing Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 25th of this year. Warner decided to get one up on the house of mouse this time around, however, as they decided to leverage their ownership of HBO and DC Comics to bring fans the new Wonder Woman movie at no additional cost should they choose to watch on HBO Max. This came as a shock for many people, as Disney had seemed to set the terms for how movies would be released for streaming with their Mulan strategy. It would seem that HBO Max is doing all they can to avoid the mistakes that Disney previously made, while also trying to assert themselves in the streaming service market. This news was received very well by people itching to finally see the newest Wonder Woman movie, and if the release of Hamilton on Disney Plus is any indication, the handling of Wonder Woman 1984 is likely to bring in a lot of new subscribers for HBO Max.

With the ball officially in Disney’s court, it will be interesting to see how they follow up on HBO Max’s decision to capitalize on Wonder Woman 1984, while also trying to salvage their streaming reputation. One move that the company could make that would echo HBO Max would be to release the long-awaited Black Widow movie on Disney Plus. This would even the playing field between HBO Max and Disney Plus so to speak, as Disney would also have a major superhero film exclusive to their platform. So long as Disney doesn’t slap some kind of “Premier Access” on the film, it would definitely bring in a surge of viewers that are looking to watch the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What do you think of big studios putting their movies on streaming services instead of or at the same time as in theaters? Is this something that could carry on when movie theaters start to operate normally again, or is this just Hollywood’s way of making the best out of a bad situation? Let us know in the comments below, and for more news on pop culture and everything entertainment, check back here at its-bananas.

The Best Games to Break In Your New Console With

After months of anticipation, the newest Playstation and Xbox video game consoles are finally out in the wild. If you’re one of the few lucky people that was able to grab a pre-order when they first went live, or you were fortunate enough to grab an online order when websites like Walmart and Gamestop weren’t completely crashed, then you’re likely going through the agonizing process of choosing which game to play first. Both the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S have a wealth of games to play at launch, and for many gamers the first experience of playing on next-gen hardware is one that needs to be memorable. We’re going to break down exactly which games are the best ones to play first on these new consoles so that you can make sure that your first experience with them is one you’ll never forget.

The Best Console Exclusive: Spider-Man: Miles Morales

via engadget.com

One of the biggest games on the Playstation 4 that drove a lot of people to the system was Marvel’s Spider-Man by Insomniac Games that released in 2018. This game was hailed as one of the best superhero games to ever be created, rivaling the superstar status of the Batman: Arkham games. Spider-Man saw the continuation of a trend in the video game industry towards superhero games that aren’t just mediocre movie tie-ins, but instead combine compelling original stories with engaging and rewarding gameplay. The game won dozens different awards and received stellar reviews from nearly every video game news outlet when it was released, so it was natural to expect that there would be a sequel. Insomniac has delivered on those expectations with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a sort of pseudo-sequel/spinoff of 2018’s Spider-Man that follows fan-favorite character Miles Morales. This game takes the scale of the original Spider-Man game and dials it down just a little bit, making for a shorter story, but it certainly doesn’t skimp out on the gameplay. Miles Morales builds on the fantastic gameplay of it’s 2018 predecessor by adding new abilities for Miles that are different from his counterpart Peter Parker. Miles can cloak himself to remain hidden from enemies, and he can supercharge his punches with electricity in what’s known as a venom blast. These new powers are ripped straight from the comic book source material of Miles’ character, and fans of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film might recognize these abilities from the movie. This game is perfect for fans of Playstation’s exclusive properties because it truly shows off the power of the PS5. With new possibilities like ray-tracing and the option of running the game at 60 frames per second, the snowy streets of New York look breathtakingly gorgeous. For people looking for an experience that they can only get on the Playstation 5, they’re in good hands with Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Not only does it show off the impressive tech of the system, but it illustrates just how dominant Playstations’s exclusive library of games really is. And with the Xbox Series X releasing without any new exclusive titles, it would seem that Playstation is going to continue being the number one system to play for exclusive content at launch.

The Best Game for Cross-Play: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

via callofduty.com

One of the biggest things that the video game industry has been focusing on for the past couple of years is a push towards cross-play. In simplest terms, cross-play allows people that all own the same game, but play on different consoles, to play together regardless of which console they own. This has been a long-desired feature amongst gamers for many years now, and with the popularity of games like Fortnite and other battle royale type games, industry executives have recently put a big focus on making sure people can play together on any system. One of the biggest franchises in gaming that is jumping on the cross-play train is the Call of Duty series. This first-person military shooter is one of the most popular and profitable video game series ever, and its yearly installments ensure a consistent player base that always has something new to play once last year’s game gets old. The Call of Duty series introduced cross-play with last year’s Modern Warfare, and this year’s Black Ops Cold War is continuing forward by allowing both cross-play and cross-progression. This means that not only can you play with your friends that have an Xbox or PC while you have a PS5, but it also means that if you ever decide to move from one console to a different one, you’ll maintain all of the progress you made on your initial system. This gives players an unprecedented amount of flexibility when it comes to deciding how they want to play, and it’s hard not to commend publisher Activision for making sure that Call of Duty is as accessible as possible.

The Best Game to Put a Lot of Hours Into: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

via pcgamer.com

As single-player games have evolved from linear experiences focused on one singular story into expansive open worlds with a hundred and one things to do, those games have consequently gotten significantly longer in regards to the time it takes to fully complete them. One industry icon that has embraced this change is the Assassin’s Creed franchise. These stealth games that use popular historical backdrops such as Revolutionary France and Renaissance Italy are known for their rich stories that follow the centuries long conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Knights Templar. The last couple of installments in the series have seen developer Ubisoft take a wildly different approach to the series when compared to its first handful of games. Starting with 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, the series shifted towards a focus on much more expansive open worlds with tons of room for exploration. Along with a revamped combat system, Origins also put a stronger focus on the importance of side missions, making them much more interesting and rewarding for the player. These changes in the Assassin’s Creed formula were reinforced further with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and they’re being refined even more with this year’s highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Valhalla takes players to the age of Vikings and Dark Ages England, an era that has been highly requested by fans since its early days. With this shift towards exploration and deviation from the main story, games like Assassin’s Creed are getting much longer to complete, often boasting stories that require at least fifty hours of playtime in order to complete. When combined with the side missions of the game, Valhalla could easily take upwards of a hundred hours of playtime for someone to experience everything the game has to offer. This is a tantalizing prospect for people that love to just get lost in a game, and Valhalla has been advertised as the game for that exact crowd. With a bevy of different customization options alongside the expansive maps of both England and Norway to explore, this is the perfect game to lose track of time with. Now that the newest generation of gaming is here, there’s a lot to be excited about. The technology of the Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 paves the way for games that are unlike anything the industry has ever produced before. With things like cross-play and massive single-player games becoming the new normal, gamers have never had better options. It’ll be exciting to see where the industry goes from here, especially considering the strong lineup of games that each console already has at their disposal. Which game do you plan to break in your new system with? Let us know in the comments below and for more news on pop culture and everything entertainment, check back here at its-bananas.
